Around 50 children attended the second annual Pony Racing ‘Buzz Day’ at the British Racing School in Newmarket on 12 October.
Aimed at children between the ages of 8 and 15 with no previous involvement in pony racing, the day’s activities included ‘riding’ the racing simulators with former Flat jockey Michael Tebbutt, a demonstration of tacking up for the races, fall training with Champion Hurdle-winning jockey Steve Smith Eccles and a tour of the classrooms, stables and gallops of the British Racing School.
Attendees on the day included eight-year-old Jack Wilmot, who went home very happy after his morning at the school and afternoon at Newmarket races. Jack said: “It was the best day of my life so far, I will never forget it.” The three-hour introductory session included complimentary tickets for children and their parents to attend Dubai Future Champions’ Day at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Racecourse.
“We were very pleased with the day and we are hoping to run a follow-on session where those with ponies can bring them for a training day,” said Buzz Day organiser Carol Casey.
