The BHS Access week highlights national and local equestrian issues. In particular the society strives to defend, extend and promote a safer, more easily accessible network of off road rights of way. Off road riding is important to and regularly used by equestrians of all backgrounds and disciplines. Whether you like to have fun by hacking with friends, exploring the countryside, or are exercising your next elite show jumper or eventer, every horse, rider and carriage driver has the right to access safe off road routes.
Every day the BHS Rights of Way team, supported by its network of more than two hundred Bridleway Officers and 130 Affiliated Bridleway Groups, work hard for these rights to access safe, enjoyable, off road routes both nationally and locally. Everyone however can become involved to ensure that we all have the right to safe off road hacking. One such event is happening on Saturday 19th May at Breaks Fold Farm, West End, Summerbridge, Harrogate HG3 4BB. This is a Farm Fun Ride organised by the West Riding Group of Endurance GB.
The Brecks Fold Farm Fun Ride is kindly being hosted by WRG member Louise Colley and her partner Richard in support of BHS Access Week and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. This is a new ride which offers stunning views towards Ilkley, Pateley Bridge and Appletreewick on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is a challenging ride which crosses open moorland and involves some steep climbs in places. The routes are 8k, 20k, and 30k with a start time of 9.30 a.m. (11.00 a.m. for the short route). All routes however are dependent on the weather and may change on the day. If you would like to take part in this ride, please contact Kerry Dawson on 01977 517971 or 07818 283144. The entry fee is £13.00 for EGB and Group Associate members and £18.00 for non members. Hopefully the Yorkshire monsoon will have ended and this will be a super ride out for all involved. This is a great way to support the BHS Access Week and allow riders to have some fun in the process.
If this is not for you there are many other ways to help and you do not have to confine your involvement to Access Week. You can organise a fund raising event at any time this year to support BHS access in furthering its work to expand the equestrian access network in the United Kingdom. If you would like to get more hands on with Rights of Way in your area, contact the BHS Access Team for more information on becoming a volunteer, or join your local Affiliated Bridleways Group.
