British Horse Society LogoBritish Riding Clubs kicked off their 2013 Championships with the British Riding Clubs Winter Championships at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire over the Easter weekend.

The Winter Championships is a team event open to both Seniors and Juniors. Riders competed in area qualifiers up and down the country to qualify and this year saw a record number of competitors go through the Area qualifiers, with more than 500 riders at the Championships.

In the senior classes, North Ryedale RC (Area 4) lifted the Novice Team Showjumping title on a team score of zero, Holsworthy RC (Area 19) were second and Buckingham RC (Area 5) were placed third. The Dressage team competition was won by East Yorkshire RC, again from Area 4, Mid Somerset RC (Area 12) were placed second and North Lincs RC (Area 16) came third.

Overall individual winner was Clare Bull from Dartford RC,riding her own Pinto Fields Regal Hit, finishing with an incredibly high score of more than 80 percent. Clare was thrilled to win on Pinto Fields Regal Hit, a six-year-old who also qualified for the BD Novice and Novice Freestyle Winter Dressage Championships.

List 4 BD Dressage Judge Jo Winfield FBHS, who judged classes on both days of the competition remarked: “It was a real pleasure to judge at these Championships, the overall standard of riding and presentation was extremely high throughout the weekend, with many riders riding forward into a soft contact and their horses and ponies were then showing correct paces and way of going, which is exactly what I would like to see of riders at this level.”

The junior dressage team title went to Sevenoaks RC (Area 10), with The Frampton Family RC (Area 18) in second place and Nantwich RC (Area 20), in third.Ellie Duggan, riding another lovely bay horse called Sensibility, also from the winning Sevenoaks team, took the overall individual honors.

The junior Team Showjumping competition went through to a thrilling jump-off with Mount Mascal RC, again from Area 10, winning on a zero score. North Ryedale RC (Area 4) were second, and Solihull RC (Area 5) came third. Mount Mascal RC had two teams in the top ten, with theirsecond team also finishing in eighth place.

Lorraine Meadowcroft of, the Championship sponsor, said: “I really enjoyed meeting all the competitors who made it through after battling it out in the keenly fought qualifying rounds.” She presented all the Championship team winners with an embroidered show rug and baseball cap, along with Easter eggs for the top three teams and dressage individuals.  Full results are available on the British Riding Clubs website
