Point to Point LogoThe Midlands Area Point- to- Point season opens on Sunday with the Midlands Area Club Point- to- Point at Thorpe Lodge. 162 entries have been taken for the 7 races, 50 of these are in the final race, the NFU Open Maiden and this race is likely to divide on the day.

Racegoers may get the chance to see top amateur rider Sam Waley- Cohen in action. The Cheltenham Gold Cup winning rider, who recently won the King George Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day with Long Run, has two possible mounts in the Lincolnshire Meat Company Men’s Open race. Rumbavu won the Restricted race at this meeting last year and subsequently progressed into Open company. This horse has already been out this season having finished second at Ampton last Sunday. Waley – Cohen may instead choose to partner the classy Roulez Cool who finished second behind Cloudy Lane in the John Smith’s Foxhunter Chase at Aintree last April.

The other feature race, the AGA Ladies Open race is a qualifier for the AGA Ladies Open Point- to- Point Championship Final at Stratford on Friday 7th June. Sagalyrique, a three time Ladies Open winner in 2012 for Angela Rucker, may take some beating here.

Thorpe Lodge is situated 4 miles south west of Newark, near the A46 and 5 miles from the A1. For satellite navigation systems the postcode is NG23 5PY. There is an excellent car park at Thorpe Lodge that allows good viewing and is also the ideal place for a picnic. Admission is £10.00 per person with children under 16 free.
