Members of Ackworth & District Riding Club were among the 120 people and horses plus 26 dogs out in force in East Hardwick, Wakefield on 18th December for Horsemen’s Sunday held at Berrill Farm, East Hardwick by kind invitation of Mrs Freda Walker.
This truly unique event was brought to life many years ago by Mrs Walker’s late husband Wilf, then President of Ackworth & District RC, who organised a carol singing on horseback event which proved to be rather difficult! When the Vicar of East Hardwick later became involved the event became the annual blessing of the horses ceremony, or Horseman’s Sunday.
Organised annually by Alison Harris, a founder member of ADRC, and conducted by the Reverend Shelagh Stacey, Vicar of Carleton and East Hardwick, this year the event raised £274.07 in aid of the Brooke Hospital for Animals, providing veterinary care and education for the owners of working equines in the Middle East and the Indian sub-continent.
