Talented polo player, Anna Ward is busy taking part in tournaments up and down the country. Here we catch up with Anna, and find out what she gets up to and how to get involved with polo.

Tottie-sponsored rider, Anna, is based at the White Rose Polo Club in East Yorkshire; Anna’s team of horses include Chalita, Roxy and Noemi, with youngsters Mollie and Brandy in training this season.
Anna (26) has been involved with polo for the last three years and is hooked on the exciting sport after building up a strong team of ponies.

Daily/ Weekly routine

Team Tottie member Anna Ward, guides readers through her weekly routine. It can change week to week, but this is the normal routine she follows for the ponies, if Anna has a big competition the workload may change slightly.
Monday: The ponies’ day off. They come in from the field at 5.00pm. Fed at 6.00pm and stabled for the evening.
Tuesday: Breakfast feed at 7.00am. Exercised at 9.00am, Hay net at 10.00am, turnout in the field at 12.00pm stabled at 3.00pm. I go to ride at 6.00pm and Stick & Ball till 9.00pm. Feed & stable ponies.
Wednesday: Breakfast feed at 7.00am, Exercised at 9.00am, Hay net at 10.00am turnout in the field at 12.00pm stabled at 2.00pm. Start to tack up the horses at 5.00pm. Match starts at 6.30pm. Finish play at 8.00pm. Feed & stable the ponies for the evening.
Thursday: Breakfast feed at 7.00am, Exercised at 9.00am. Hay net at 10.00am turnout in the field at 12.00pm stabled at 3.00pm. I go to ride at 6.00pm Stick & Ball all the horses until 9.00pm. Feed & stable the ponies for the evening.
Friday: Breakfast feed at 7.00am, Exercised at 9.00am. Hay net at 10.00am, turnout in the field at 12.00pm in and stabled at 3.00pm. I go at 6.00pm, to school all horses for the weekend in the arena till 9.00pm. Feed & stable the ponies for the evening.
Saturday: Sunday: Breakfast feed at 7.00am. Exercise: 20 Minutes Trotting at 9am. Hay Net 10.am 11.30am I go to prepare the ponies & tack them up. 1.00pm start to warm-up the ponies. 2.00pm Match starts. 4.00pm horses un-tack & wash off, 5pm Ponies have their feed and are stabled for the evening.
Sunday: Breakfast at 7am. Exercise: 20 Minutes Trotting at 9am. Hay Net 10.am 11.00am Anna coming tack up ponies. 1pm start to warm-up the ponies. 2pm Match Starts. 4pm horses away, un-tack washed off, 5pm Ponies have their feed. Ponies turn out in field 6pm.

10 Top Tips to Getting Started in Polo
Here are Anna Ward’s tips on getting involved with Polo.
1.) Do your polo research on-line.
2.) Find a club that offers lessons for beginners.
3.) Learn the basic rules from the Blue rules book.
4.) Buy a hand mallet and ball and practise in your garden, walking the dog etc.
5.) Practise at every opportunity.
6.) Use the wooden horse as much as possible.
7.) Try to watch as many games/players practise as possible.
8.) Ride as much as you can.
9.) Don’t just play the shot you can do, push yourself and learn the harder shots too.
10.) Be patient, polo is a hard sport and requires dedication, if you practise you will become a better player.
