Cathy Gilbert had a weekend to remember at Midlands Carriagedriving’s Club Championships, held at Catton Park in September. Not only did she win the combined Novice class but she also gained the most points from judge Claudia Bunn in Standing Presentation to receive the Bennington Trophy, a magnificent cast iron horse.
Despite being placed last after dressage, and adding to her penalty score with two cones down, Cathy whizzed round the obstacles for the best times of the day to overtake the rest of the class and win by less than one penalty ahead of Megan Wheeldon. Megan was the only competitor of the event to achieve a double clear in the cones.
Emma Burton continued her come-back performance with a win in the Intermediate; lying second to Amanda Nisbet after dressage, Emma put in a better cones score and, although incurring time penalties on the marathon course her quick obstacle times kept her in the lead with Amanda second.
Elisabeth Greensmith and Ruth Auton were the only completions in the Open class and finished in that order while in the Pairs, David Wheeldon scraped home ahead of Ian Gilbert by just 0.05 of a penalty. Claudia Bunn headed the combined tandem and teams class from Anne Chambers, both driving tandems.
In the Paul Tointon Team Trophy the Northerners of Megan Wheeldon, Graham Clements, Dave Wheeldon and Angie Smith ran out the clear winners ahead of the Team With No Name (Cathy Gilbert, Ginny White, Julie Tompkins and Anne Chambers).
The One-Day Event was won comfortably by Linda Wiggin, who led throughout, ahead of Wendy Nix.
