The make-up of the Pony Club Mounted Games Final for the Prince Philip Cup at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) is now complete after the final two teams of six qualified at the Pony Club Championships last week.
The top three teams from the 2010 final, Rockwood Harriers, Oakley Hunt West and Devon & Somerset, had all qualified earlier in the summer and they will be joined at HOYS by Strathean, Cheshire Hunt North and Northern Zone Qualifier winners Orkney. Cheshire Hunt North are making it to the final for the third time in the past four years and will be hoping to improve on their best recent finish of fourth place in 2008. The furthest north branch of the Pony Club, Orkney, are back at HOYS for the second year in a row, whilst Perthshire-based Strathean will become a welcome new edition to recent line-ups of the final.
The Pony Club Mounted Games is one of the most popular and enduring entertainment displays at HOYS and will again feature throughout the week. The spectacle sees six teams taking part in a range of activities and by the time they get to the show the finalists have all, through immense skill and determination, fought off over 250 other clubs nationwide to qualify. The Prince Philip Cup started in 1956 with the aim to encourage a higher standard of riding throughout the Pony Club and to stimulate among the future generation a greater interest in riding as a sport and as a recreation.
The climax to this year’s competition is likely to be just as nail-biting as 2010, when Devon and Somerset edged out Oakley Hunt West by a single point!
